The Orphan of Bagram
The Orphan of Bagram is about an indomitable little girl growing up in the misogynist, hate filled world of the Taliban where the only education allowed is for boys to attend religious schools. Sharina's parents taught her that men and women were equal in God's eyes. At great risk, they also taught her basic mathematics and literacy skills. When they're murdered in front of her by the Taliban, she's forced to live with a brutal Taliban judge named Azir. She's befriended by an American soldier who came to Afghanistan in disguise the year before and tried to prevent Azir from publically whipping her because she dared learn from books. After a harrowing escape from the judge disguised as a boy, she helps the soldier stop a suicide attack on the American embassy and leaves for America with him as his new daughter.
